TSUNAMI RELIEF PROJECT |
|
|
|
|
| |
|
The devastating
tsunami which hit
Sri Lanka
on December 26th, 2004, caused unimaginable
destruction, claiming 35,000 lives and erasing US$900 million in
assets. Naturally, the worst hit was the fisher-folk on the
coastline. Jinasena was in the forefront of relief efforts,
providing food, shelter and clothing to the affected. To
supplement these basics, Jinasena also set up a medical camp
manned by 15 doctors and a communal kitchen which supplied two
meals a day to 250 in a village called Kosgoda.

The Company has
undertaken many rehabilitation projects: rebuilding homes and
schools and more. Jinasena has also opened a special account with
the Commercial Bank of Sri Lanka for disaster relief funding and led
the way with a pledge of US$ 1 million. For more information on our ongoing projects and relief work

REHABILITATION AND UPGRADING OF FACILITIES AT MAHAWANNAMMADUWA VIDYALAYA |
|
|
|
|
| |
In the ancient
capital of Sri Lanka, Anuradhapura, Jinasena identified a school –
(the name ‘Mahawannammaduwa’ will be unpronounceable to many)
that was on the verge of closing down due to many problems. Jinasena
began at the beginning. A complete kitchen unit was set up, operated
by parents on a rotational basis, with all foodstuff provided by the
company which now provides the children with a wholesome, nutritious
midday meal. The toilets have been refurbished and a tube-well,
supplemented with a storage tank, provides water on tap.

The library has
also been refurbished and the Company has donated computers to help
the children stay abreast of today’s academic demands. In addition a
fully equipped sewing room has been set up staffed by teachers
supported by the Company. Jinasena also provides school-books,
uniforms, shoes and school bags on a regular basis. In the pipeline
is a full-scale Carpentry Workshop. Plans for another school in the
same area have already been blueprinted.

PRE-SCHOOL AT HORUWILA, WILPATTUWA |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
Horuwila is a remote village in the Wilpattuwa district in the dry
zone of Sri Lanka. The residents of this village are subsistent
farmers who cannot afford to send their children to a fee paying
pre-school in the town due to financial and transport constraints.
A pre-school was established on the 15th
of January 2007 on the request of
the villagers. A temporary building, necessary furniture, sports
goods and equipment were donated by the company. The year end
concert was sponsored by the company along with other
recurrent expenditure.
This is an ongoing project with plans to improve and expand the
pre-school and its facilities.
